Hello! My name is Julian and I film surfing with my drone! I was born and raised in Miami, Florida and didn’t actually grow up surfing since there were rarely waves back home. My girlfriend got me into surfing while we were in college and ever since then I’ve been obsessed. When it was time to “get a job” I only applied to places on the east coast of Central Florida. In 2016 I moved to Satellite Beach and tried to surf as much as possible. Admittedly, I’m not the best surfer in the world and needless to say my GoPro videos weren’t very impressive…
I stumbled upon some surf videos on youtube from an aerial perspective and I couldn’t believe how insane the footage looked. After watching a couple more videos, I was convinced I had to pick up a drone and capture the waves in Central Florida.
I’ve spent the last 2 years focusing on surfing and filming surf on my free time. I saw one of Gnarley Charley’s Surf Series events coming up on my facebook feed a couple of weeks ago and felt that my flying and video editing was at a point where I can actually add value. I called Charley up not knowing what to expect and; luckily, Charley was more than stoked to have more footage of his Surf Series so he let me film his event on August 3rd, 2019 in Paradise Beach Park, Indiatlantic. His events are super fun and the groms are always putting on a show, so it was easy to get good footage!
Charley asked me to come film for his next competition and I said yes before I even knew where it was. It was in Ponce Inlet, FL on August 24th, 2019. Luckily, there were some pretty decent waves going off despite the onshore wind and the groms did a great job! While flying, I had a couple of near misses with some pilings but thankfully didn’t wreck and was able to capture some good footage. I’m stoked to keep flying and filming as long as there is surf, even on the small days… Florida has some gems! Thanks to Dan from Raw Surf for letting me blabber on about myself for a bit. Peace!
