Storm Chaser Mike Presents Gnarly Charley’s Grom Surf Show Winter Surfing Contest #1 November 19th, 2017

Gnarly Charley Surfing Contests have been happening at the beach all up and the east coast now since 2006.  And “Gnarly” Charley Hajek is passionate about his work! Undertaking a formidable task ahead by educating groms (kids) from very young ages all over Florida how to surf competitively. Four divisions; boys, girls, open, and junior pro, including long boarding, and push ins are available for kids to compete in. Charley’s mission, in his own words, is to “help Groms out in contests so that when they surf E.S.A. eastern surfing association or N.S.S.A., National Scholastic Surfing Association, or any other contest, they will have the confidence they will need to do well”. Being a stepping stone for all kids who are serious about taking their surfing to the next level, or just wanting to give surfing a try and see how it goes. There is no big pressure with Gnarly Charley.

About Gnarly Charley Hajek

Charley began his surfing in 1970 in world famous Daytona Beach, Florida. Daytona is home to racing’s Daytona 500, and infamous Bike Week. As soon as Charley graduated high school he booked it to Jacksonville Beach, where he worked at Sunrise and Aqua East Surf Shops,  gaining a foundation of knowledge surrounding the surfing industry. It was then and there that he began his epic amateur surfing career, winning Men’s Division East Coast Surfing championships in 1983, and on the E.S.A. All-stars team. After which traveling abroad became a regular thing for Charley, surfing contests all over the world. Living the dream.

1994 was an entrepreneurial time in Charley’s life, starting the very first surf camp in north Florida, ahead of his time. In 1996, he began running Bubble Gum Surf contests, which continued on for ten years. Then in 1999, Charley assisted in coaching the U.S. surf team, and that same year was voted all-star of the year. In 2004, the Gnarly Charley Grom Surf Series came to life in Jacksonville Beach, and then moved to New Smyrna Beach, where it is Charley’s home base now. Can you blame him? New Smyrna Beach is home to one of the most consistent waves on the entire east coast! Charley holds 6 N.S.S.A. titles, and 3 for the E.S.A. He also won the E.S.A. state championships of surfing 4 times!

“I love to surf in contests and love teaching kids to as well. I have pretty much surfed my life away and wouldn’t change any of it.” – Charley Hajek
